Do you look tired, even after a good night’s sleep? Sagging skin around the eyes can be part of the aging process but you don’t have to live with droopy eyelids. If you want to restore your youthful appearance, then you may want to look into undergoing a blepharoplasty.

What is a Blepharoplasty procedure?

Blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery. This cosmetic procedure has become popular in recent years due to the straight forward nature of the surgery with predictable results whether preformed for cosmetic or for functional restoration of upper field of vision loss. During the treatment, skin and sometimes fat is removed from the surrounding eye area through a fine incision in the natural eyelid crease. The result is bright, youthful eyes that make you look refreshed and rested and allow you to see the full extent of your natural visual field.

Eyelid surgery can be done on both the upper and lower eyelids either separately or combined. Some patients choose a blepharoplasty as a way to overcome problems with disfigurations, deformities, or eyelid defects. Other people choose the procedure to slow down the appearance of aging due to sagging skin.

What to Expect with Eyelid Surgery

If you are interested in learning more, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rednam, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Houston Plastic Craniofacial & Sinus Surgery. She will perform an examination of your eyes and eyelids and discuss your overall health and situation to determine if you are a good candidate. If you decide to move forward with the procedure, a surgery date will be scheduled as well as options for payment discussed.

During your outpatient surgery, small incisions are made within the upper eyelid crease or below the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid for the lower eyelid. These incisions are minimally visible and over time fade to give you a natural appearance after recovery. Sedation and local anesthesia are used to ensure your comfort during the surgery. But for select patients the entire procedure can be performed under local anesthesia.

Recovery after Eyelid Surgery

The risk for complications is minimal and most experience a smooth recovery period ending with a natural, beautiful result. The day after the surgery you will likely have some swelling and bruising on the eyelids. This is temporary and will largely resolve after a few days to a week. Applying cold compresses can help to minimize the pain and reduce swelling. Most people can return to normal actives within seven to ten days after the surgery.

Results You Will Enjoy

A week of recovery time is worth the results that you will enjoy for years to come! By removing the excess skin from the eyelids a youthful appearance can be achieved. Even when done for cosmetic reasons, some people find that their visual field improves greatly.

If you are looking for options to remove excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids, or you want to get rid of the bags under your eyes, it is recommended to talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon. Experience is key to the best results possible.
