Facelift surgery has become increasingly popular as the desire to look younger and refreshed has grown. A Facelift is an elegant surgical technique that restore the balance to the face by addressing the loose skin, volume loss, and deep lines of the jaw, cheeks and neck.
Dr. Rednam strongly believes that an ideal facelift result leaves you with a natural, refreshed look that is the best version of you. Results that leave you looking “pulled-tight” or unnatural are avoided with use of meticulous technique and choosing the correct type of facelift for your needs.
When you come into a consultation to see Dr. Rednam she will evaluate your family history, medical history, medication history, skin elasticity, bone structure, facial lines, and hairline to determine if you are a good candidate for a facelift.
Multiple face lift techniques exist and differ by the length and positioning of the incision, placement of deep sutures and final result. Dr. Rednam uses total IV anesthesia during your facelift procedure combined with local anesthesia. With this type of anesthesia, you continue to breathe on your own and normal blood pressure is able to be maintained which is important for risk reduction with a facelift. A short scar facelift is made in front of the ear and partially behind the ear within the natural crease of the ear. This incision may be extended into the hairline of the temple or behind the ear if needed to provide a quality result. Incisions are designed within the natural hairline for males.
Dr. Rednam utilizes the covering of the deep muscular system (SMAS) of the face and neck to achieve long lasting and natural results. No tension is placed on the skin closure, which is separated from the SMAS layer and re-draped after any excess is trimmed. Fat grafting is often utilized in conjunction with a face lift to restore the midface volume lost with aging. The final result is a soft, subtle, elegant and refreshed look.
During your recovery you can expect at least 2 weeks of noticeable swelling and bruising that may prevent socialization outside of the home. You will be seen the day after surgery by Dr. Rednam and are free to wet your face and hair in the shower after our appointment. Medications will be prescribed for the recovery period, to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Typically your initial recovery period is 4 weeks with most surgeons recommending a facelift to be done a minimum of 3 months before any major event. Expect that you are able to apply any concealer or makeup one week after surgery.
On average a facelift will set back the hands of time 8-10 years, but you will continue to age and gravity will continue to exert it’s effects. It is not uncommon to undergo a secondary facelift, especially if you undergo a facelift in your late 40s, early 50s. For safety reasons, you cannot smoke cigarettes or take any nicotine products for weeks before and after surgery. Nicotine severely compromises the blood flow to the skin and can cause skin death and breakdown. Drinking around the time of surgery and in the immediate post operative period is also discouraged to avoid post operative bleeding complications.
Compliments to a Facelift
For some, a facelift is only a portion of their overall treatment plan. Skin maintenance and care is an extremely important component of facial rejuvenation and will be customized for each individual. Minimally invasive skin-tightening procedures and skincare products may be used as an adjunct to facelift surgery or to completely avoid surgery in the appropriate patient. Treatments such as Fraxel skin tightening and resurfacing, Chemical peels, Microneedling with PRP and medical grade skin care regiment may be recommended. A facelift is a wonderful investment in yourself and your first impression, your face! The more you care for your skin both before and after surgery the better your results and the longer your maintain them.
