Women choose to have breast augmentation for a variety of reasons, such as to increase breast size, improve symmetry, or for reconstruction after a mastectomy. While this surgery is one of the most requested cosmetic procedures in the US, there are some risks. This is why it is so important that you do your research when choosing a board certified plastic surgeon.
Dr. Rednam takes the time to meet with each of her patients, talk about their goals, and customizes an approach that will provide them with the results they are looking for. If you have had a previous breast augmentation with a negative outcome, you may want to consider revision cosmetic breast surgery. Dr. Rednam will consult with you regarding your undesirable breast results, and discuss your realistic expectations for the revision procedure.
Revision Cosmetic Breast Surgery
Patients may consider a breast revision surgery if they are unhappy with the outcome of the first breast implant surgery. This could be due to unhappiness with size and appearance of the implants, frustration with the feel of the implants, a ruptured implant, rippling of the skin over the implant, or too much scar tissue. Whatever the reason, Dr. Rednam understands the frustration felt when a previous breast surgery outcome is not what was expected. She will do all she can to ensure an improved cosmetic breast result.
There are a number of ways to repair a poor breast surgery. The revision surgery may remove or replace the implants, tackle scar tissue problems, add internal support or alter the appearance of the breasts. Dr. Rednam can discuss all of your options to ensure you make an informed decision.
Dr. Rednam has a variety of techniques she uses to repair undesired breast surgery results. Depending on the needs of the patient, she may need to remove the implants and replace them with a different type or size. If scar tissue is the issue, it may need to be removed around the implant. Other instances require the implant pocket to be adjusted with stitches or with special support slings. Fat grafting, a breast lift or other procedures may be necessary. Breast revision surgery is different from primary breast surgery because it is very challenging and requires a lot of more understanding or anatomy and specialized techniques to correct issues caused by a previous surgery.
Recovery
Recovery from this procedure is similar to a breast augmentation procedure. Results are visible both immediately and progressively. Patients see changes right away, but optimal results can typically be seen a few months following surgery. Patients will need to wear a special bra to support and protect the healing process. Mild to moderate pain is to be expected for the first few weeks following surgery. Women can expect to return to work within the first 2 weeks after surgery with a more sedentary job. Activities should be kept light for at least the first few weeks with restrictions lifted at 6 weeks after surgery. Drains may be needed in some revision cases.
What to Expect
Patients should have a realistic understanding about the limitations of a revision cosmetic breast surgery. Some issues may not be fully correctable because previous alterations to the body are permanent. Also, the subsequent surgeries are more complex than the initial surgery and with that comes more risk. The surgery may be longer than the first, and the cost may be higher.
