The MOHS procedure, also referred to as micrographic surgery, is done in several stages by a MOHS surgeon or dermatologist to ensure complete elimination of all cancerous cells while leaving healthy tissue intact. However, depending on the size of the cancerous lesions that need to be removed, MOHS surgery can sometimes leave a visible hole or divot in the skin. In these cases, the patient may desire MOHS reconstruction surgery.

MOHS reconstruction is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure that is performed to improve any skin irregularities or deformities that develop following the removal of skin cancer lesions. MOHS micrographic surgery can correct holes, divots, and scarring at the surgical site resulting from skin cancer removal.
For visibly noticeable skin irregularities such as especially deep holes, many dermatologists recommend that a plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Rednam, perform reconstructive surgery to ensure evidence of the MOHS excision is less visible. Post MOHS Reconstruction Procedure
The post MOHS reconstruction procedure is generally performed under sedation. There are several surgical techniques that can be used for MOHS reconstruction. Depending on the individual patient’s needs, Dr. Rednam may utilize a local flap technique to move some of the surrounding skin and tissue around to fill in the gaps left by cancer. Alternatively, Dr. Rednam may determine that a skin graft is indicated, which involves taking a piece of skin from another area of the body to fill in the gap. There are a variety of flaps that can be used such as rotational flaps, transposition flaps, and interpolated flaps. At the end of surgery, Dr. Rednam will use sutures to close the wound in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible. Each patient is unique and requires different care. At an initial consultation, Dr. Rednam discusses the options with each patient, to determine the treatment plan and surgical procedure that is best for them.
Post MOHS Reconstruction Results
Results from this reconstructive procedure are both immediate and progressive. While the wound is closed during surgery, swelling, redness and any scarring takes longer to heal. Patients are asked to refrain from strenuous activity for at least a week, to insure proper recovery. Post MOHS patients can also improve any scarring scar treatments such as Biocorneum Scar Cream.
